The reality of porn addiction

That throat clearing moment, uneasy looking around and weird bodily movements when this topic raises its seemingly ugly head.  Yes, you guessed it, porn, a discussion some of us choose to avoid.  The reality is that porn addiction is quite prevalent and a serious issue not only for men but for women too.

Some might suggest, depending on your personality and beliefs that it’s an absolutely taboo subject because not all people that have seen or watched porn become addicted.  You may not become addicted after watching it once or a few more times, but it may result in the individual walking away with some twisted or sordid ideas about the opposite sex, the way in which they perceive marriage as well as thoughts on starting a family which involve the conception of children.  If you think about it, those thoughts and perceptions can possibly yield quite a bit of damage.

More likely than often the root of porn addiction stems from past emotional damage which has taken place and this in turn allows the addiction to become serious.  The sad reality is that this problem can become really serious and well, the people that produce the porn really don’t care much at all, they are just concerned about making the cash.  The aim is to keep you coming back over and over again, producing videos and images that arouse the viewer, eventually this becomes like a drug that the individual finds hard to live without.  For some people porn addiction becomes a more difficult habit to kick when compared to hard drugs such as cocaine.

There are five prominent stages that will most likely lead to addiction.  The first phase known as early exposure is where the individual is exposed to porn at an early age, this can be compared to the saying of this being the gateway of drug to porn addiction.  The second stage eventually leads to addiction, this is evident in the need to continue to come back, this slowly but surely becomes part of your way of life, you find yourself quite deep in without a way of escape.  Escalation, is the third stage, this happens after a while.  It is at this stage that you start to search for porn that has stronger graphic quality.  The strong graphic quality may have disgusted you in the earlier stages but now this stimulates you in new ways.   The next stage is then the desensitisation phase, at this point the individual becomes numb and even the porn which is most graphic and degrading does not bring about any satisfaction, the need to find the same pleasure simply can’t be found.  The last phase is when the individual acts out sexually, and actually carries out their desires physically on whoever they are surrounded by and this can become quite dangerous.

While for some this may be a taboo topic for others it can be quite serious and it may well just be something to think about.  Are you addicted?
