Waist measurement

  1. Find the top of your hip bone
  2. Place the bottom edge of the tape measure on top of your hip bone
  3. With the help of a mirror, ensure that the tape is horizontally wrapped around your abdomen
  4. Breathe naturally
  5. Make a note of the measurement

If your waist measurement is over 94 cm, you should consider losing weight; if it is over 102 cm, you definitely need to lose weight19. You should also consult your GP for a full cardiovascular visit and diabetes assessment.

Body mass index (BMI)

  • Measure your your weight in kgs and your height in meters
  • Take your weight divided by your height squared

Normal BMI for an adult is 18.5 to 24.9. If your BMI is over 25 you should consider losing weight; a BMI of 30 or over is considered obese and you definitely need to lose weight.
