Oh dear, do I have Candida?

There are various symptoms of this sickness. The ten most general are:

1. Fungal infections of the skin and nails,
2. Chronical tiredness,
3. Digestive system problems like bloatedness, constipation or diarrhoea,
4. A weak immune system,
5. Concentration problems, poor memory and a lack of focus,
6. Skin problems like eczema, hives, acne and a rash,
7. Irritability, moodiness, anxiety or depression,
8. Vaginal infections. Note that there is a difference between a vaginal yeast infections and Urinary tract infection (UTI). The first is caused by Candida and it affects the vaginal area. The Second is caused by a bacteria in the urethra and affects the bladder and urinary tract.
9. Serious seasonal allergies and itchy eyes, and
10. Cravings for sweet things and carbohydrates.

Causes and prevention

Your diet – it is an important factor

Candida is promoted by sugar, carbohydrates and starch. If you have a diet that is high in sugars you will not only crave sugary foods but you will also feed the yeast and promote a vicious cycle.

What may you eat and not eat?

Veggies: Eat non-starch fresh vegetables or you can steam or roast the vegetables. For example spinach, artichoke, asparagus, avocado, broccoli, cucumber, tomato, cabbage, etc. Onions, garlic and ginger are also effective anti-fungal food. Vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes, maize, beet and peas are not allowed.

Meat: Be sure that your meat, fish and chicken is fresh and not treated with chemicals, pesticide or antibiotics. Avoid processed meats (like lunch meats) as well as smoked and vacuum-packed meat. Pork products are not recommended.

Dairy products: Almost all dairy products should rather be avoided with the exception of ghee, butter, kefir and probiotic yoghurt.

Grains: Gluten free grain products contain a lot of fiber and it is wonderful for the elimination of Candida poisons. This includes: Buckwheat, millet, oat bran and quinoa. Any products made from wheat, rye, oats or barley is not allowed.

Fruits: No fruits! The high sugar content feeds the candida even if it is natural sugars. A bit of lemon, however, will do you no harm

Beverages: Most herbal teas contain anti-fungal properties and can consume it with a clear conscience. The following are not allowed: Coffee, black and green tea, diet and energy drinks. Why? The caffeine in these beverages can cause the blood sugar to rise, but the biggest problem is that it will weaken your adrenal glands that can affect your immune system. Alcohol is, off course, a definite no as it is high in sugar.

Nuts and seeds: Some nuts and seeds are safe to use, others not so much. The distinction is made based on the presence of mold. (Mold is also a type of fungus and is thus not recommended for your candida). You may eat the following: Almond, flax, hazelnut, pecan nuts, sunflower and walnuts. You may not eat cashews, peanuts and pistachios.
Bone: Bone is difficult to digest and high in carbohydrates and you should thus exclude it from your diet as much as possible and only consume it in small amounts. Soya products are also not allowed as it usually undergoes genetic modification.

Seasoning: Be careful of sauces like mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, and any pasta sauces because they usually contain too much sugar. For a healthy salad sauce rather use something like olive oil with lemon juice. The use of spices and herbs is generally safe. Many spices and herbs contain anti-oxidants and anti-fungal properties and can improve circulation and counteract inflammation.

Weak immune system and food allergies

A weak immune system makes you susceptible to candida. Make use of a good multi-vitamin and keep your body healthy.
Go for tests for any food allergies. It can make your digestive system a soft target for imbalances.

People that suffer from the following are more susceptible for candida: Chronic illnesses, immune system problems, cancer and HIV

Chronic liver function

Keep your liver healthy and do not consume too much alcohol.

Chronic stress

Teach yourself how to deal with stress. A good way to beat stress is a regular and enjoyable session between the sheets.

Too much antibiotics

Do not take antibiotics too quickly if you feel unwell – it destroys the good bacteria in your body. Regularly take probiotics to keep it in balance.

Women are more susceptible to candida

Ladies, we are more inclined to get candida than men are due to the oestrogen levels and anatomical differences. If you use things like contraceptives and avoid hormone therapy, you can be safer from candida.
